‘There are borders’ – opening and vernissage in Leipzig from 5 June

In 2016, LEGIDA grew larger and larger and changed interpersonal life in Leipzig. The media was dominated by dehumanising, linguistic images of migrants. We wanted to counteract this and founded unofficial.pictures.
Through our work, we create space to share different, personal perspectives, strengthen empathy and build mutual understanding.
A lot has happened since then, more diverse voices have become audible, migrant people have fought for space and created their own media platforms.
In recent years, we have observed a backlash in many parts of society: Populist opinion-making and right-wing extremist forces are on the rise again - the tone among people has become harsher and more hardened.
We want to counter this with diversity and dialogue. To mark the opening of our new premises in Leipzig, we are showcasing projects from the last nine years that offer diverse perspectives on migration, arrival and belonging. Together with you, we want to continue thinking, listening and exchanging ideas – for a society based on solidarity with free people!

The program for the opening weekend:
Thurs. June 5th, 6:00 p.m. Opening with dinner, speeches and DJ
Sat. June 7th, 7:30 p.m. Update on »NO REST« and the current situation on the Belarus-Poland border (Activists will report on their experiences and repression: we are collecting smartphones, power banks, charging cables and donations for their work)
Sun. June 8th, 7:30 p.m. Zine presentation »A look over our shoulder, an insight into our perspective«
Mon. June 9, 7:30 PM: Lecture and discussion on Frieder's photographic work »Komplex:Heimat«

Open during the opening weekend, 6–9 June, from 3 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. each day.
Monday to Friday 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., weekends and public holidays by appointment.

We look forward to seeing you at our new premises at Ernst-Mey-Str. 7A in Leipzig-Plagwitz!
In addition to our Leipzig office, where Frieder and our new volunteer Vieronika work, the space will primarily be used for exhibitions and workshops, making it visible to people from Leipzig and beyond.
The opening exhibition and programme are sponsored by GLS Treuhand and the Leipzig-Southwest district budget.

Exhibition on initial reception in Suhl continues to evolve

Community Art Centre opens in Suhl

The ceremonial opening of the Suhl Community Art Center on December 7th was truly wonderful, thanks to the Meckerchor choir, a moderated three-course meal, and many interested guests! The exhibition for our project "Perspective Change: Initial Reception" is now open every Wednesday and Thursday. After an initial theater workshop with a school class, we are planning a wide range of accompanying programs – the latest information will be posted on the project website.
Smaller events, such as an evening commemorating resistance fighters during the Nazi era in Suhl and a play about the Sinto-German boxer Johann Wilhelm Trollmann, have already taken place.
Many more projects are planned for the year – you can find the invitations between the newsletters on Instagram and WhatsApp channels of the Community Art Center.

Invitation to the opening of ‘Komplex: Homeland’

Exhibition as part of the f/stop Festival for Photography Leipzig.
31 May – 16 June 2024 in the Saxon Waiting Room, Leipzig Central Station
Exhibition opening on 31 May 2024, 7 p.m., with a welcome address by Leipzig's Mayor and Deputy Mayor for Culture, Dr Skadi Jennicke
‘We Saxons are bright, the whole world knows that! And if we're not bright, then we're pretending,’ says an old Saxon proverb. Since childhood, Frieder Bickhardt has been puzzled by the idea that ‘the Saxons’ are something special. It's not just rhyming sayings that refer to this; politicians also use this local pride in their messages. After thorough research and a calm look through his large-format camera, he has captured various places, scenes and events in Saxony in photographs. These are places where something has happened and is still happening. Something that is and can become part of the ‘Saxon’ identity for many.

The f/stop Festival for Photography runs from 31 May to 16 June 2024 and, true to its title ‘Escape into the Public Sphere’, will expand into public spaces. We are delighted that ‘Komplex : Heimat’ is part of this year's f/stop Festival for Photography. Eight photographs from the work will be on display. The group exhibition in the Saxon waiting room of Leipzig Central Station was curated by Leon Hösl and Magdalena Stöger.

You can find all the information about the festival here.

Workshop and exhibition as part of the f/stop festival

The f/stop Festival for Photography will run from 31 May to 16 June 2024 and, true to its title ‘Escape into the Public Sphere’, will expand into public spaces. We are delighted that Frieder's ongoing project ‘Komplex : Heimat’ will be part of the festival programme! The work is expected to be on display in the historic waiting room at the main railway station as part of a group exhibition. The confirmation is still very fresh – so we are still a little excited and very curious. Come along in large numbers!

We are also leading a poster workshop as part of the festival. In light of the obviously misanthropic and fascist ideas of the Potsdam Meeting and the massive reactions on the streets, we ask ourselves: what now?
We want to meet with you over two weekends and think about it together, exchange ideas, and then take action together. Using found and our own photographs, collages, and texts, we want to design a joint poster, which will be shown in a public square in the city center as part of this year's f/stop festival.
1st block: April 26th, 6-8 p.m., April 27th & 28th, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
2nd block: May 10th 6-8 p.m., May 11 & 12, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
Opening / Presentation: on one day during this year's festival (May 31-June 16)
We meet at Kunstraum D21 Leipzig. Participation is free for you! However, we expect you to participate in all workshop phases. Registration (with a brief description of your connection to the topic) by April 14, 2024, to office@unofficial.pictures

The f/stop team is also happy to receive helping hands and donations. You can find all the information about the festival here.

We would like to cordially invite you to the magazine launch with reading!
In the photography and writing workshop in Leipzig with John Sauter and Frieder Bickhardt, seven participants explored origins and identities, East German and (post)migrant perspectives, portraits and interviews, and together developed a striking magazine.
Meet the authors at the launch event on 17 February from 7.30 p.m. at Galerie KUB, Kantstraße 18, Leipzig.
