Just like the first edition created in Leipzig, our magazine is once again the result of an intensive photography and writing workshop – this time in Weimar, Thuringia.

Living in East Germany often brings us into collisions between the past and the present. The economic exploitation of East Germans comes to a head with the violent racism that was unveiled after the fall of the Berlin Wall. A rising class consciousness battles with in-group vs. out-group competition. The charming, rolling countryside is studded with equally charming, but severely underserved towns losing more and more of their young by the year. The political future of the region is the subject of much anxiety and uncertainty, and the underlying wounds have never fully healed. Yet, there is still a lot of hope and energy, with many people working together for a better future with space for all our realities, and tirelessly continuing to build a sense of home and community here.

Inspired by the study “East-Migrant Analogies” by Naika Foroutan and the dialogue between Foroutan and Jana Hensel in “The Society of Others”, Denise Lee and Rafael Brix sought to create a space in which (post-)migrant and East German perspectives could come into focus. Over four weekends in the autumn of 2024, we were able to exchange on the similarities and differences in our experiences. Six diverse and personal contributions emerged.

“von hier” is an invitation – to discover, to understand, to empathize. It is our attempt to capture the complex realities of our coexistence without falling into stereotypes.

We want to show that being “from here” means being part of this diverse community, regardless of origin or background.
Perhaps, in the stories in this issue, you will discover not only something about the protagonists, but also about yourself and your own relationship to the place and the people you call home.

Rafael Brix und Denise Lee

Supported by the Fonds Soziokultur, Thüringer Staatskanzlei and City of Weimar.

76 p., photographs and texts
bound magazine in digital print, 16 x 24 cm
1. edition, 2024
Language: German/English

This magazine is available to you free of charge. unofficial.pictures is a non-profit organisation.
We can realise projects like this one because we are dependent on donations angewiesen.

[37

0":"post-2597","1":"product","2":"type-product","3":"status-publish","4":"has-post-thumbnail","6":"product_cat-buecher-und-prints","8":"first","9":"instock","10":"shipping-taxable","11":"purchasable","12":"product-type-simple
["GET
